Mandate

The Australian African Studies Institute’s mandate empowers the Institute to serve as a central hub for African studies and initiatives in Australia, facilitate collaborative research, innovative educational programs, and meaningful partnerships between Africa and Australia led by people with an African Ancestry. The Australian African Studies Institute’s mandate, granted in Mombasa 2023 by the African Science Research and Innovation Council (ASRIC) under the auspices of the African Union Commission, is a testament to the African Unions Sixth Region and their commitment to fostering mutual understanding, cultural exchange, and academic excellence.

With ASRIC’s endorsement, we are equipped to advance initiatives that promote Africa’s rich intellectual, cultural, and scientific heritage, contributing to sustainable

development and global knowledge through an African lens. This mandate emphasizes our responsibility to uphold the values of the ASRIC (African Union Commission)

by nurturing an inclusive academic community that celebrates diversity, champions interdisciplinary research, and builds lasting cross-continental connections. It affirms the role of the African diaspora and their contribution to Africa’s development. It rejects neocolonialism and attempts to undermine African people and their sovereignty.
